Lie Angle

Equipment

Lie angle is the angle between a golf club’s shaft and the ground when the club is soled flat at address. If it does not suit how you deliver the club at impact, the face points left or right of where you aimed even when you swing well.

Upright vs flat

  • Too upright: the heel digs and the toe is up at impact. For a right-handed golfer the face points left, so shots start left.
  • Too flat: the toe digs and the heel is up. The face points right, so shots start right.
  • Left-handed golfers see the mirror image.
  • The higher the loft, the bigger the effect, so a lie error shows up more with wedges and short irons than with long irons.

Static vs dynamic lie

The static lie is the angle measured with the club sitting on the ground. The dynamic lie is how the sole actually meets the ground at impact, and it is the one that matters. During the swing the shaft flexes and the toe drops, so a club that looks right at address can play differently at impact. That is why lie is checked with shots, not only by looking at the address position.

How to check your lie angle

Put a strip of masking tape on the sole, or hit off a lie board, and look at where the mark sits after solid shots. A mark towards the heel suggests the club plays too upright for you; towards the toe, too flat. Read it together with the start line of those shots, not from one swing. Our Lie Angle Check walks through this and gives a plain-language reading.

Can lie angle be changed?

Many irons and wedges can be bent a degree or two by a club fitter using a loft and lie machine. Forged heads are usually easier to bend than cast ones, and some cast or multi-material heads should not be bent at all, so check with the manufacturer first. Length and lie interact: golfers who play longer-than-standard clubs usually need a more upright lie, because their hands are higher at impact.
